Suggesting that everyone and their grandma should get nukes is a cop-out. It's intellectually lazy, like a clueless poker player deciding to go all in.
It may make every country that acquires nukes marginally safer, but on the whole it brings us drastically closer from the time when one of those gets lobbed around, and we have a pretty good idea how things go from there.
If we can't protect those territories and democracies through sanctions, diplomatic pressure and conventional warfare, then maybe we should let them go. It's an awful amount of human suffering but it's still peanuts against the global setback that will happen in the other case.
